Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus terrestris also known as puncture vine and devil’s weed is native to the Mediterranean regions, India, China, Africa and Australia. Its leaves have been used as a male tonic and for the treatment of male and female infertility and menopause. Research has shown that the active ingredient of Tribulus leaves called protodioscin is mainly found in Tribulus leaf sourced from the Central European regions of Bulgaria and Slovakia.

In Hindu system of medicine, Ayurveda, the plant has been used to treat spermatorrhoea, gonorrhoea, impotence, uterine disorders after birth, cystitis, painful urination, kidney stones and gout.

  • Aphrodisiac; increases libido and sexual function
  • Oestrogenic in females
  • Androgenic in males
  • Fertility agent
  • Reduces cholesterol and total triglyceride levels

Therapeutic Indications

  • Male and female infertility
  • Impotence
  • Decreased libido
  • Menopause
  • To restore or build vitality (especially during convalescence or after surgery) and to assist in responding to stress
  • Ergogenic; to improve physical performance in athletes

Products of Tribulus are also used in bodybuilding for its testosterone boosting properties to help build muscle and strength.

For male sexual inadequacy and infertility, Tribulus combines well with Damiana, Korean ginseng, Rhodiola and Saw Palmetto (see Sexual tonic), whereas for low libido in women and menopause, it combines well with Black Cohosh, Shatavari or Wild Yam.

Tribulus should be used with caution in pregnancy. If Tribulus is being used to promote fertility in women, its use should be ceased immediately after pregnancy is established. Also, people with androgen-sensitive tumours should avoid use.
